Harrisonburg, Va- Tuesday's showdown between Potomac State and Eastern Mennonite was a jaw-dropping, momentum-swinging battle that saw the Catamounts erase an 11-run deficit and author one of the most electrifying comebacks of the season.
Eastern Mennonite wasted no time setting the tone, scratching across a run in the first before adding two more in the second, highlighted by a two-run blast from Jacob Dwyer. The third inning proved disastrous for the Catamounts, as Eastern Mennonite erupted for eight runs on a flurry of extra-base hits and timely singles, ballooning the lead to 11-0.
Potomac State began to chip away in the fourth inning. Lex Wescott grounded out to bring home the first run, and Peyton Blue followed with an RBI single to make it 11-2. In the fifth, the Catamounts added another run on a productive out, inching closer but still trailing by eight.
In the sixth inning, Potomac State began the comeback. Seth Healy delivered an RBI single, and moments later, a series of wild pitches allowed another run to cross the plate. That set the stage for Braeden Oviedo, who crushed a three-run home run to cut the deficit to 11-8. The rally continued with more chaos on the basepaths and a sacrifice fly from Jaxon Drennen, capping a stunning seven-run inning that pulled the Catamounts within one at 11-10.
While the offense surged, the bullpen steadied the storm.
Caden Johnson entered in relief and delivered a critical stretch, limiting Eastern Mennonite to just one run over 3.1 innings while striking out three. Braden Sloan followed with dominance, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings to slam the door and earn the win, allowing just three hits while keeping Eastern Mennonite completely off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
With momentum fully flipped, the Catamounts completed the comeback in the seventh. Oviedo came through again, this time with an RBI single to tie the game at 11-11, punctuating his career day at the plate.
In the eighth, Dylan Rice delivered the go-ahead RBI single, giving the Catamounts their first lead of the game at 12-11. Then, in the ninth, Oviedo struck again—launching his second home run of the day to extend the lead. Moments later, Drennen delivered the knockout blow with a towering three-run homer, putting an emphatic finish on a 16-11 victory.
Oviedo was the undeniable offensive catalyst, finishing with two home runs and five RBIs.
