Keyser, W.Va.- The WVU Potomac State College Athletic Department proudly announces that Athletic Trainer Carita Mills has been named the 2026 Athletic Trainer of the Year by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), recognizing her outstanding service, dedication, and impact on student-athlete health and performance.
A true Catamount through and through, Mills' journey with Potomac State began as a student-athlete on the women's soccer team from 2007–2009. During her time at Potomac State, she earned her associate degree before continuing her academic and professional pursuits at Frostburg State University, where she completed her bachelor's degree, and later at California University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her master's degree in Exercise and Sport Science.
Mills first stepped into the role of Athletic Trainer at Potomac State in 2013, serving through 2018. She returned to campus in 2021 and has since resumed her leadership of the athletic training program. With her combined tenure, the 2026 recognition also marks a milestone; celebrating 10 years of dedicated service to Catamount Athletics.
Throughout her career, Mills has exemplified a commitment to growth and excellence. A lifelong learner, she is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Athletic Training (DAT) from Florida International University while also holding certification as a sports nutrition coach. In addition, she is a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist and Human Movement Specialist, and is certified in cupping and scraping techniques through PESI. Her wide-ranging expertise allows her to deliver comprehensive, cutting-edge care tailored to the evolving needs of today's student-athletes.
Mills has played a pivotal role in transforming the college's athletic training facilities. Through her vision, hands-on approach, and commitment to innovation, the facilities have seen significant upgrades, including renovations and the implementation of a fully stocked, on-site nutrition cart; ensuring student-athletes have access to vital recovery and performance resources.
Beyond the facility improvements, Mills' greatest impact is felt through her relationships with student-athletes. Known for going above and beyond, she supports athletes not only in injury prevention and recovery, but in all aspects of their lives. Her holistic approach to care, combined with her compassion and professionalism, has made her an invaluable resource for the entire department.
"Carita embodies everything this award represents," said Mandi Larkin, Director of Athletics. "Her dedication to our student-athletes, her constant pursuit of knowledge, and the pride she takes in this institution make her truly deserving of this national recognition."
A respected colleague, trusted mentor, and cherished friend, Mills' influence extends far beyond the sidelines. The WVU Potomac State College community proudly celebrates her achievements and the lasting legacy she continues to build, both professionally and personally as a devoted wife and mother of two alongside her husband, Matt.
With this honor from the NJCAA, Carita Mills not only represents the best of athletic training, but also the heart and spirit of Potomac State athletics.
