A true Catamount through and through, Mills' journey with Potomac State began as a student-athlete on the women's soccer team from 2007–2009. During her time at Potomac State, she earned her associate degree before continuing her academic and professional pursuits at Frostburg State University, where she completed her bachelor's degree, and later at California University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her master's degree in Exercise and Sport Science. Mills first stepped into the role of Athletic Trainer at Potomac State in 2013, serving through 2018. She returned to campus in 2021 and has since resumed her leadership of the athletic training program.
Carita is a certified sports nutrition coach. In addition, she is a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist and Human Movement Specialist, and is certified in cupping and scraping techniques through PESI. Her greatest impact is felt through her relationships with student-athletes. Known for going above and beyond, she supports athletes not only in injury prevention and recovery, but in all aspects of their lives. Her holistic approach to care, combined with her compassion and professionalism, has made her an invaluable resource for the entire department.
Carita Mills was awarded 2025-26 NJCAA Athletic Trainer of the Year on April 15th, 2026 at the national convention in Kansas City, Missouri.
Carita resides in Keyser with her husband Matt and their two children.
