Keyser, WV. – Under a hazy gray sky, Potomac State edged Monroe, 6–5 Sunday afternoon at Golden Park setting the stage for a rematch later this week at the Region 20 Tournament.
Potomac State wasted no time setting the tone in the opening frame. Braden Sloan beat out a ground ball to open the inning. Lex Wescott then walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. John Mallow then bunted for an RBI single to bring home the game's first run. Jaxon Drennen grounded out to plate Wescott and push the Catamounts ahead 2–0.
Drennen carried that momentum to the mound, working efficiently through the early innings. Monroe, however, began to chip away in the third, using a double into the gap to cut the deficit to one. An inning later, a well-placed single evened the score at 2–2.
PSC responded in the fifth, and it came off the bat of Peyton Blue. With two outs, Drennen walked. On the next pitch, Blue drove a double into the outfield, reclaiming the lead at 3-2.
An inning later, Wescott delivered the game's most pivotal blow. With two runners in scoring position, he ripped a double that scored a run and when an errant throw tried to get Wescott at second, Sloan raced home to stretch the lead to 4–2 and giving Potomac State breathing room.
The Catamounts added an insurance run in the eighth behind the bat and legs of Wescott. After he doubled, an error by the Monroe pitcher on a botched pick-off play allowed Wescott to score from second base making the score 6-2.
While the offense created separation, Jacob Stavrakis worked to preserve it. Following Drennen's steady start, Stavrakis managed the middle innings with poise, limiting Monroe's opportunities and keeping the game on script heading into the final frame,
In the ninth, Monroe surged back. After an error opened the inning, the Mustangs used a pair of singles to close the gap to 6-3. Then with two runners aboard and two outs Alejandro Bernard drove a ball off the fence to score two runs, however he got caught between second and third and was retired in a rundown to end the game.
Drennen struck out eight in five innings of work for the win, while Stavrakis worked the final four innings for his second save.
Potomac State, 30-12, will complete the regular season with a pair of games on Monday at Golden Park against Cecil College. First pitch of the doubleheader is at noon.
