Winchester, Va. —A pair of middle-inning surges from Shenandoah University proved too much to overcome as the Catamounts fell 13–7 on the road Wednesday.
Shenandoah struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on early traffic against Potomac State starter Jacob Stavrakis. A two-run triple into the gap ignited the rally before a productive groundout pushed a third run across, giving the Hornets a quick 3–0 advantage.
Potomac State answered in the third, beginning to chip away at the deficit. Seth Healy sparked the inning, and a ground ball off the bat of Lex Wescott brought home the Catamounts’ first run. But any momentum was quickly muted in the bottom half, where Shenandoah responded emphatically with three runs of its own—highlighted by run-scoring hits that stretched the lead to 6–1.
The Catamounts continued to grind in the fourth inning. Braden Sloan delivered an RBI single to trim the margin to 6–2, showing Potomac State’s ability to manufacture offense. Yet again, Shenandoah had an answer. A run scoring on a defensive miscue pushed the lead back to five.
In the sixth, Healy doubled to drive in a run, and moments later John Mallow turned on a pitch and launched a two-run home run, suddenly pulling the Catamounts within striking distance at 7–5.
But Shenandoah responded with authority. In the bottom of the sixth, a two-run homer erased the surge and pushed the lead back to four runs, halting Potomac State’s comeback before it could fully materialize.
The decisive blow came in the seventh. Shenandoah erupted for four runs, powered by back-to-back home runs and aided by another defensive miscue. What had been a competitive contest quickly widened into a 13–5 margin.
In the ninth inning, Wescott ripped a triple to bring home a run, and another crossed on a ground ball, trimming the final margin to 13–7.
Offensively, Mallow’s home run and two RBIs highlighted the day, while Wescott added a pair of hits and two runs driven in. Healy also contributed with an extra-base hit and a run scored as part of the Catamounts’ nine-hit effort.
