Catamounts Secure 5–1 Victory in Home Opener

August 26, 2025

Keyser, W.Va. – The WVU Potomac State College Catamounts opened their 2025 season in dominating fashion on Tuesday evening, defeating Prince George's Community College 5–1 at Stayman Field. A balanced offensive attack and strong defensive play powered the Catamounts to the win in front of their home crowd.

Sophomore forward Mateo Miranda set the tone early, burying a penalty kick in the 5th minute to give Potomac State the lead. Miranda later added his second goal of the night in the 70th minute to seal the victory, finishing with two goals on three shots on goal.

Cesar Sales extended the Catamount lead in the 17th minute with his first collegiate goal, and Hasan Azam provided the spark just before halftime with a brilliant strike in the 40th minute. Azam wasn't finished—he struck again just four minutes into the second half, recording his first multi-goal performance of the season.

Defensively, the Catamounts held firm. Goalkeeper Justin Leclerc faced nine shots on goal, making five saves and allowing just one penalty kick score. The back line limited quality looks and frustrated the Owls' attack throughout the match.

The Catamounts move to 1–0 on the season and will return to action on Tuesday, facing Howard Community College on the road in continued Region 20 action.
